The Coaching Pathway

Introduction
There are two main strands to developing your skills as a coach. One is Coach Education, the second is Coach Development. The two go hand in hand and to become a successful coach you will need to participate in both.Coach Education courses are the nationally recognised coaching awards. These all involve some form of assessment which will result in an RFU Coaching Qualification.
Coach Development Seminars are designed to further your knowledge within a particular area, e.g. Line-out play or introducing contact. These courses are not assessed and do not result in a coaching qualification.
If you are interested in becoming a coach or have any questions then you should contact your Club Coach Coordinator. The the case of Whitchurch RFC this is Lance Suttle-Jones.
Pathway
There are several levels / stages of coach qualification and Level 3 is currently the highest qualification for community-based coaches.
The stages are described below and they must be tackled in sequence (ie. you can't jump straight to a Level II course). If you click on each of the items you will find details of the courses;
- IRB Rugby Ready (requires registration and online assessment)
- Tag Rugby (3 hour Practical)
- Rugby Ready Practical (1 Day)
- Level I (2.5 Days)
- Continual Professional Development / Beyond Level I (Various sessions)
- Level II (69 Hours of which 32 hours is over 2 weekends)
- Level III (3 Modules over 12 months. By invitation only, CV & DVD of coaching to be supplied)
Note : All the links above direct to the Midlands region. Whitchurch is possibly the most northern club in the region and sometimes it is easier to get to some Cheshire venues. Therefore we have reached out to the Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria region and we are welcome to attend their courses and events.
You can find details of the latest courses in Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria here.
Other Considerations
If you are coaching any Youth sides then you will also require;
- A Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) Check via the RFU
- RFU Best Practice & Child Protection Course

- Emergency First Aid course
